difference. So shocks it is. More important than having fresh shocks is having adjustable shocks. If yours aren’t, you could be giving away tenths or even full seconds to your competitors. It’s not that the shocks themselves are going to make you faster; but knowing what to do with them and being able to tune them to fi t the situation and track can make all the difference. Most of the time you can fi nd a good set of adjustable shocks for road car-based racers for under $1000. Sometimes you’ll even have enough left over for camber plates. There’s another part that won’t give you any speed by itself, but used correctly can make you faster. Engine Let’s be blunt: $1000 isn’t going to get you much in the engine department beyond a basic refresh or a new short block for some engines. If yours is really tired, that may be the way to go. Otherwise, the best you can do is intake and/or exhaust. Headers can do wonders for some engines, as can a better-fl owing intake pulling air from the right spot. Either of these – sometimes both – can be had for less than a grand. These are probably your best options for improving power for that kind of money. Tires You’ve already got a tire budget, and they are a wear item. Still, one more set of tires to add to your season means less time running on rubber that’s lost a good amount of its stickiness.
