The format of the Summer Shootout is set up a lot like the National Championships, where your fi nishing position in the heat races sets the grid for Sunday’s main race. Consistency and fi nishes in the fi rst three races are paramount. Since many have travelled so far to make it to the event, there is a certain “never say it’s over till it’s over” attitude. It’s always a thrill to see thrashing prevail and the cars return to the track for the next race. Fifteen cars made up the grid in the Camaro Mustang Challenge series. For the majority of the sessions, it was the trio of Michael Mosty, James Proctor and Dan Allford stealing the top podium spots. In race three, the father and son Team Jordan managed to knock Allford from the third step. At the conclusion of the fi nal 40-minute championship race, it was Proctor (Chevy), Mosty (Ford) and Allford (Chevy) spraying the champagne. In the American Iron category, the eventual winner could not be selected with wins coming from Casey Holdway, Frank Robertson and Jim Dulaney. However, the man who took all the lunch money at the end of the day was Mark Smith, earning the fi rst win of his career. As with the American Iron class, the 944 Spec races leading up to the fi nal event left everyone wondering who would be 72
