Mid-Ohio Championships Update

As the seventh annual NASA Championships take shape, I can’t help but think of all the great memories from last year.
The first things that stand out in my mind were the countless parties and barbecues in the paddock throughout the week. It shows that not only did all these people come from across the country to take their shot at becoming a NASA champion, but that they came to have a great time. Every night throughout the week at the track, there was another awesome party with good food, great drinks and, most important, great people hanging out. Officials, racers, crew members and enthusiasts from all over the country converge at this prestigious event once a year and share all our best racing stories. Every weekend at the track is memorable for me, but the Championships are always special

One of the most memorable races for me was in the American Iron class. Who doesn’t love the thought of big American V8s rumbling, growling, and screaming around a race track? Not only did last year’s American Iron group have awesome cars, but the battle for the Championship will be one I will remember for a long time. It was one of the hardest fought, greatest displays of driving I have ever seen. Chris Cobetto and Dean Martin battled it out in their Mustangs lap after lap, often going side by side through multiple corners together. Do yourself a favor and watch the race here. I look forward to those two guys, among others, battling it out in their rumbling American Iron cars again this year.

Another great race to watch was in — no surprise — Spec Miata. It was perfect weather … until the cars were released from grid. On the warm-up lap, a huge storm moved in over half the track. With most of the cars on dry setups, and one-half dry track and one-half wet track, it was an exciting race! Check it out here. This year we’re already looking at a huge field with paramount contingencies so it promises to be a another exciting Nationals. See you at the track!

• 47 Spec Miata entries. More than $10k in Toyo Contingency!
