American Iron Puts the Power Down at Putnam
A combined regional event for the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, the May 12 and 13 races at Putnam Park showcased a growing field of American road racing muscle.
American Iron Extreme had a field of three, and Saturday’s sprint started with Chris Griswold in the lead for most of the race. Persistence finally paid off for Brian Faessler, who grabbed first when Griswold’s tires went away toward the end. Faessler took the checkers with a fast lap time of 1:16.27, with Jeff Henderson in third place.
Lesson learned, Griswold mounted fresh slicks for Sunday’s race and held off young Faessler. Griswold won with a blistering 1:15.2 lap time.
American Iron had a decent field at Putnam, but car counts are still growing as more drivers finish their builds. Saturday’s race finished with TJ Bain in first place, followed by Robin Burnett in second and Dave Algozine sharing the podium in third.
Sunday’s race started with a bobble at the green flag between Audrey Zavodsky and Elliott Fisher, with Algozine bumping the guardrail, losing a few places in the process. The hiccup left him in position to put on a great show in an epic battle for third and fourth position with Fisher for the entire race. TJ Bain walked away with his second win of the weekend, shattering the track record previously held by Jay Andrew with a lap time of 1:17.142. Behind Bain, Zavodsky earned second and Burnett took third. SN
